What does a feature announcement include?
A feature announcement answers three questions in order: what changed, why it matters to the reader, and what to do next. It is written for users, not for engineers. The unit is one feature or one closely related set of features, not a whole release.
A complete announcement usually contains a clear title that names the feature, a one or two sentence summary, a screenshot or short clip, the benefit in the user's words, and a call to action such as a link to the feature or its help article. Many teams also state who can use it (plan, role, or region) and when it becomes available.
The announcement is distinct from the technical record. A changelog lists every change in a release, and release notes describe a version in detail. A feature announcement picks the one change that deserves attention and explains it in plain language. The same feature can appear in all three places with different depth.
Channels vary by audience and urgency. Common ones are a changelog page, an in-app notification or widget, an email, a Slack or community post, and social media. A single feature often gets a short in-app version and a longer written version on the changelog.
Why do feature announcements matter?
Shipping a feature and getting it used are two different jobs. Users do not read commit logs, and most do not explore menus looking for something new. If nobody tells them, a feature that took a quarter to build can sit unused for months.
Announcements drive feature adoption by closing that gap. They also reduce support load, because customers who already asked for the capability learn that it exists before they open another ticket. Customer success teams use announcements as a reason to reach out to accounts that requested the feature, which turns a release into a retention conversation.
There is a trust effect as well. A steady, visible stream of improvements shows that the product is alive and that feedback is acted on. Prospects reading a public changelog see momentum. Existing customers see their feature requests being closed in public. The post on announcing new features to lift product adoption walks through this cause and effect in more detail.
Feature announcement examples
Some public examples show the range of formats teams use:
- Slack introducing huddles. A blog post explained the problem (quick voice conversations without scheduling a call), showed the feature, and pointed to help documentation. The same feature was also surfaced inside the app itself.
- Figma announcing Dev Mode. A launch page and a keynote demo targeted developers specifically, while the changelog entry stayed short and linked to documentation.
- A typical B2B SaaS changelog entry. Title such as "Export reports to CSV," two sentences on what it does, a screenshot, and a note on which plans include it. This is the most common shape and the easiest to sustain.
- An in-app card for a small improvement. One line, one icon, a "Try it" button. Used for changes that do not justify an email but should still be noticed in context.

How to write a feature announcement
- Lead with the user outcome. Say what the person can now do, not what the team built. "Schedule posts a month ahead" beats "New scheduling module."
- Keep the first version short. A title, two or three sentences, and one visual. Link out for details instead of writing them inline.
- Show it. A cropped screenshot or a ten second clip explains more than a paragraph. Highlight the exact button or menu.
- State availability. Which plans, roles, platforms, and regions have it, and when. Vague availability creates support tickets.
- Give one call to action. "Open settings," "Read the guide," or "Try it now." One link, not five.
- Target the audience. Use segmentation so admins hear about admin features and mobile users hear about mobile features.
- Pick channels by weight. Small changes go to the changelog and a widget. Larger ones add email, Slack, and social. Major launches get a product launch plan.
- Close the loop. Notify the people who requested the feature by name. Then watch views, clicks, and usage to see whether the message landed.

Feature announcement vs. changelog, release notes, and product update
These terms overlap, and teams often use them loosely. The differences are about scope and purpose.
- A changelog is the running log of all changes, ordered by date or version. Complete, brief, and often technical.
- Release notes describe one release, including fixes and known issues. Broader than a single feature.
- A product update is the umbrella term for any message about product changes, including pricing, policy, and maintenance.
- A feature announcement is one product update focused on a single new capability and written to drive use of it.
Common mistakes
- Announcing every minor fix with the same weight as a major feature, which trains users to ignore all of it.
- Writing from the roadmap ticket instead of the user's point of view.
- Sending one message to everyone, including people who cannot access the feature.
- Announcing before the feature is fully rolled out, so users go looking and cannot find it.
- Publishing once and never measuring whether anyone saw it or used the feature afterward.
How AnnounceKit handles feature announcement
AnnounceKit publishes each announcement to a changelog page on your own domain and to in-app widgets with more than ten display modes, so the same post reaches users where they already are. Segmentation targets each message to the right users, and email digests and Slack carry it to people who are not logged in. AI post generation drafts the announcement from your notes, and the official MCP server lets AI agents create and publish posts directly. Feature requests with voting and Jira sync connect the announcement back to the customers who asked for it. Pricing is flat per project from $79 per month, with a 15 day free trial.
