Tarrasque.io is 1 year old!

I'm extremely proud to announce that Tarrasque.io is now 1 year old!

Join the celebration on Discord and use coupon code ONEYEAR to get 10% off all plans and merch. Valid until 31/07/2021.

It feels like yesterday, but last year on this exact day, Tarrasque.io launched in Closed Beta. The Reddit post announcing its release went pretty crazy with 16.2k upvotes, and the support from the community was nothing short of heartwarming.

Open Beta followed in May 2021, which introduced the Free Plan and opened Tarrasque's doors to the public for the first time. More than 15,000 people visited the website during release week, marking a huge milestone for the app.

As of today, Tarrasque.io is the VTT of choice for well over 3,000 users, and hosts:

  • 3,107 campaigns
  • 7,676 battle maps
  • 11,070 adventurers
  • 70,132 monsters
  • 40,305 spells
  • 47.7 GB of images and video

To everyone who helped make this journey possible, THANK YOU! Your support has allowed me to continue working on something I love, and for that, you have my unending gratitude.

Thank you for an amazing year, here's to the next one!

Tarrasque.io v0.37.1

Nothing to see here, just a tiny update to fix some critical bugs before the weekend. Enjoy!

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed an issue where panels like the Combat Tracker and Stat Blocks would scroll to the top when regaining focus.
  • Fixed a bug where clicking a dice roll notation or a Combat Tracker button while its panel wasn't focused would not do anything.
  • Fixed an issue where guests/unauthenticated users would not be able to access public battle maps.
  • Fixed a bug with the XML monster import complaining about legendary actions.
  • Fixed a bug where the Shape Tool would incorrectly use the 5-10 method (when selected) for calculating shape measurements.

Tarrasque.io v0.37: UI Customization

The other day I noticed my DM struggling with the toolbar being hidden by the Combat Tracker, and it made me realize how annoying this must be for some of you working on smaller screens. So this is for all you guys. Enjoy!

What's new

  • You can now resize UI panels and move them anywhere you want! No more having to close the Combat Tracker to be able to see the underlying tools, or choosing between showing Chat or the Adventurers panel.

  • Stat blocks are now consistent with the other UI panels, and have their own top bar where you can drag them around from.

Improvements

  • The Dice Roller will now stay on screen after you have typed in a roll so that you can keep rolling without having to reopen it! You can also drag it around like the other panels, but not resize it.
  • Dice rolls in the chat will now show the full dice breakdown.

  • You can now click anywhere on a stat block to bring it to the front of other stat blocks and panels.
  • The chat text field no longer suggests previously typed entries.
  • The scrollbar is now thicker to make it easier for point-and-click scrollers.
  • Hitting Escape while on the Dice Roller text field will now remove focus from the text field.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed a bug with "Send to Back" requiring a refresh to see the changes.
  • Fixed a bug where the Dice Roller would disappear as soon as you started typing on mobile/tablet.
  • Fixed a UI bug where a long combatant's name would overflow and be hidden behind the Notes and Stat Block buttons.
  • Fixed a bug on mobile where you couldn't click-and-hold a token to bring up its token actions menu.
  • Fixed an issue where the 0 ft distance was being shown when holding a token.
  • Fixed a bug that was causing too many rerenders and causing the app to crash.

Huge thanks to Prodigy for being an awesome test subject and unknowingly giving me feature ideas! 😁

Tarrasque.io v0.36: More Player Controls & Quality of Life fixes

Lots of fixes and improvements in this update, plus a few more things to give more control to the players and ease the load on the DM. Enjoy!

What's new:

  • Players can now add their controlled creatures to the map! This works just like on the DM side, either through drag-and-drop or by clicking the Add to Map button.

  • Players can now see and control their hidden tokens, as well as hide or show them themselves! Previously, if a token was hidden, only the DM could manipulate it regardless of who else had access to it.

  • Added a new chain icon for map privacy settings, for when a map is shared by link but not visible in the players' dashboards.

  • You can now select a token on the map by clicking the respective combatant on the Combat Tracker.
  • Your group will now be notified when viewing a map without being signed in so that they can log in to control tokens. Also, the sign-in page now redirects you to the last place you were trying to access before signing in.

Improvements:

  • Campaigns now automatically update on your dashboard when you're added or removed from one.
  • Setting a creature alignment's in a stat block is now optional.
  • For maps that are only shared by link, the battle map name is no longer shown in the browser title to avoid metagaming. Instead, the campaign name is shown.
  • Combat Tracker will no longer scroll to a combatant when it's being highlighted or selected to avoid annoyances with things scrolling unnecessarily!
  • When the DM disables the Draw tool or Shape tool from campaign settings, players that are currently using the tool will be forcefully switched away from it.
  • Changing the total grid dimensions no longer messes with the square dimensions or column/row count.
  • Added more Adventurer races to the multi-select field.

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed a bug where importing a monster whose name is partly owned by another monster, would also import that monster.

  • Fixed an issue where certain touch gestures were being overridden on Windows tablets, causing you to accidentally swipe back to the previous page.
  • Fixed a bug where the leading 0 would remain when changing a numeric field like a combatant's initiative or HP.

  • Fixed an issue where the app would crash if you used a 0d0 dice notation.
  • Fixed a bug where users who switched from Titan to Standard would have a limited number of battle maps.
  • Fixed a display bug with the movement measurer being displayed after deselecting a token.
  • Fixed some browser bugs with the rich text editor.
  • Fixed an issue where you'd be switched to the Select tool after using the middle mouse button to pan the map, even though you had the Pan tool selected previously.
  • Fixed an issue where tokens would bug out when right-clicking them during movement.

Tarrasque.io v0.35.1

A warm welcome to the 1200+ DMs who signed up to Tarrasque.io for the Open Beta! Here's the first round of improvements and bug fixes from your feedback. Enjoy!

Improvements:

  • Moved the Dashboard button from the Battle Maps panel to the bottom bar of the app so that it's easier to get to!

  • Added a close (X) button to the top right of every surface.

  • Changed the look & feel of dialogs and panels for easier identification of actions and content through darker shades.

  • Moved the round information in the Combat Tracker under the combat controls so that it's more visible when hovering over the buttons.
  • Added a confirmation dialog to the Roll Initiative button on the Combat Tracker so you don't accidentally reroll initiative for everyone mid-combat. Also moved the Reset Combat button to the top as it's not one of the main combat controls.
  • Player email addresses now get partially hidden after a user joins a campaign for privacy reasons.

  • Merged first name and last name into a single "name" field for privacy reasons. No more last name requirement if you don't feel like it!
  • Changed login session expiry from 7 to 15 days so that your group doesn't get logged out mid-session!
  • Added the Note tool to the Keyboard Shortcuts.
  • Change submit button wording from "Edit" to "Save" in update modals.

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed a bug where the autocomplete input would not auto-select the first entry, and required you to manually select it before adding it to the list.
  • Fixed a bug where error messages wouldn't show up when editing a stat block, thus making it impossible to save when there were errors.

  • Fixed an issue with messages in chat that have special characters not rendering correctly.

  • Fixed a bug where the app would pop up with a warning that said you were reconnecting to the server every few minutes, even though no disconnection had happened.
  • Fixed an issue where an invalid error would pop up when trying to send back a token that was already at the back.
  • Fix a Firefox bug with spacing between the battle map search field and the Sort/Filter buttons on the dashboard.

Announcing Tarrasque.io Open Beta 🎉🎉🎉

Tarrasque.io is now officially in Open Beta - and with it, comes the Free Plan!

I'm thrilled to announce that Tarrasque.io is finally opening its doors to the public! With the introduction of the Free Plan, former patron and player accounts have been transitioned over, and can now freely create maps and campaigns. So go on, try it out and invite your friends over - Tarrasque.io is free!

Plan Changes

With the free plan being a thing, I felt that it was necessary to revamp and improve the value provided by the Titan and Legend tiers. As such, these tiers have now been replaced by the Standard and Premium plans. Here's what's changed:

  • The new Standard and Premium plans contain 5 times more storage (!) than their Titan and Legend Patreon equivalents (5 GB vs 1 GB for Standard/Titan, and 25 GB vs 5 GB for Premium/Legend)
  • The Standard plan now includes Behind-The-Scenes Content and Dev Server Access. This was previously a Legend-only feature.
  • The new Standard plan is now limited to 50 Battle Maps and 3 Campaigns for new users, but users upgrading from a Patreon tier will receive Unlimited Battle Maps and Campaigns.
  • Annual subscriptions now give you a discount of 20%, as opposed to the 10% discount on Patreon. More savings!
  • Oh, and the Sales Tax is now included in the price you see. No hidden fees. I'll eat the cost so that you don't have to.

To upgrade to the new plan structure and get these benefits, simply log in to your dashboard and click the "Manage Plan" button on the bottom left. The payment system used here is different than the one on Patreon, so you'll need to reenter your information. Just make sure to cancel your Patreon membership afterward to avoid double payments!

NB: I understand that many of you have ongoing yearly subscriptions but still want to take advantage of the new plans. Not to fret! Just get in touch with me via live chat and I'll cover the rest of your Patreon subscription!

Lifetime Discount

As a token of my appreciation for supporting Tarrasque.io early on, every patron (former and active) will automatically get an extra 10% lifetime discount applied to their account, upon subscribing to the new plan structure (yes, this stacks with the annual discount). This is just the first of a few small gestures to thank you for your support.

New-ish Landing Page

We have a slightly newer landing page over at https://tarrasque.io. The design is slightly different, some wording has changed here and there to adapt to the free plan, and oh what's this? A face reveal?! Yup. Some of you have been asking me to put a face to the name, so there you are! Hi!

New Patreon Focus

As Tarrasque.io no longer uses Patreon as its membership site, you might be wondering what the Patreon page's purpose is going forward. Well, it's here to stay! Tarrasque.io can always use more support, and I'm planning to add some interesting content to it in the very near future. Think Q&A, development bloopers, live streams, and more!

Once again, thank you all so much for your support over the past 10 months. You guys made my dream a reality.

Tarrasque.io v0.34.1

The big rewrite of the backend and the underlying infrastructure is finally finished! Development pace will go back to normal now 🙂  Enjoy!

What's new:

  • The Big Rewrite. For the nerds among you, Tarrasque.io is now running in secure containerized microservices, with the ability to scale as traffic demands, and the security of a Stone Golem! As a result of this and a few other optimizations, things should feel much snappier!
  • Multiple monster and spell imports from the SRD. Gone are the days of importing each creature one-by-one! Prepare your adventures efficiently by importing the creatures you need all at once!

Improvements:

  • A warning message is now shown when the connection to the server is lost, either due to an update or something else going wrong. This should let you know if you're not receiving real-time updates and need to refresh!

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed an issue with the chat toggle showing a negative number of unseen messages when chat history is deleted.

Tarrasque.io v0.34.0: Map Notes & Grid Alignment Tool

Today's update brings a few highly-requested features, some bug fixes, and a couple quality-of-life improvements. Enjoy!

What's new:

  • Grid alignment tool. You can now accelerate your grid setting-up process even further! Zoom in as much as possible on your map, open up Grid Settings, click on the Alignment Tool icon, and draw a rectangle covering a grid square. The drawn grid dimensions will be rounded up, but that should get you close enough for any further modifications.

  • Map notes. Mark a secret door, add points of interest, write flavor text, or remember to spring your traps. You can now switch to the Note tool on the Toolbar and click anywhere on the map to add a note for just about anything in your games. Only for the DM's eyes!

  • Constrain grid proportions. If you know you have a square grid, click the chain icon to make your cell width and height follow each other's values. This should make it a tiny bit faster to set up maps with consistent grids.

Improvements:

  • Skip dead combatants. Tarrasque.io will now automatically skip creatures in the Combat Tracker that are dead! This excludes adventurers who may be rolling death saving throws.
  • Rich text editor toolbar. The editor toolbar is now always visible above any rich-text editable area.
  • Redirect to map for password-protected maps. You can now redirect viewers to any map, regardless of if it's been shared with your players or is password-protected.

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed a bug where multi-selected combatants of the same creature would get added into combat with the same counter.
  • Fixed a bug on the Chat which caused autoscrolling to the last message not to work properly.
  • Fixed a UI bug on the Chat where player avatars were pushing the content down, thus hiding the text box.
  • Fixed an issue with the Previous button being active during the first turn of the first round of combat.

Tarrasque.io v0.33.0: Temporary HP, Quick Token Actions & Diagonal Measurements

Yet another packed update! Lots of new features and improvements, as well as some more quality-of-life updates. Enjoy!

What's New:

  • Temporary HP. Well, this has been a long time coming. Temp HP is now a thing, and persists across maps for adventurers! Also, you can no longer heal a creature to more than its maximum HP or damage it beyond 0 HP. Dead is dead!

  • Quick Token Actions. You can now change the HP and markers of a creature directly from its token without having to right-click it or go to the Combat Tracker!

  • Out of Combat HP. You can now see (and edit!) the HP of any creature, regardless if it's in combat, simply by clicking on it to reveal its HP bar and the Quick Actions.

  • Diagonal Measurements. The PHB, the DMG, and Euclid walk (diagonally) into a bar. You decide how diagonal movements should be measured now. Oh, and this works with chained measurements as well (right-click while measuring).

  • Persistent Token HP. Tokens now remember their HP in and out of combat. No more accidentally resurrecting creatures when finishing combat.
  • Persistent Token Counter. When adding 3 goblins to combat, and removing the 1st, the remaining goblins would have their top-right creature counters updated to match the new order. This led to confusion because what was once Goblin 2 is now Goblin 1. No more of that - tokens now remember their number until the last token of that creature has been removed from combat.
  • Combat Reset has a new home. Since tokens now remember their HP, there's no reason not to use this to quickly reset combat! This will ask for a confirmation before proceeding so don't be afraid to test it out!

Improvements:

  • Grid settings have been merged under one button to make them a bit simpler to use. Also, some inputs are hidden when Snap to Grid or Visible are unchecked so as not to overwhelm you with fields that you don't need to fill out!

  • Added missing Cancel buttons to some confirmation modals.
  • Changed the measurement indicator to appear higher when moved using touch to avoid being covered by the dragging finger.
  • Lots of general performance improvements, especially relating to combat and the Measure tool!

Bug fixes:

  • Fixed a bug with monster and object tokens not updating their images in real-time when their respective assets change.
  • Fixed issue with grid getting temporarily misaligned when making changes to the grid.
  • Fixed an issue with tokens becoming unbound when right-clicking on them during a drag operation.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed players to delete their assigned tokens using the keyboard shortcut.

Tarrasque.io v0.32.0: Chain Measurements, Custom Markers, Shape Ruler & Player Spells

Well, this is one of the most packed updates in a while. Enjoy!

What's New:

  • Chain measurements. You can now cut through corners and chain measurements together by right-clicking on the map while using the Measure tool.

  • Measure tool for shapes. Shapes have never been easier to draw on a grid. All shapes now automatically measure the draw distance for you while being created.

  • Custom markers. There are a ton more markers available now, which should cover most use-cases. And if not, well, you can now create your own markers!

  • Player Spellbooks. Players now have their own spellbooks to create and import their favourite spells into! I never wanna hear the phrase "what does my spell do?" again.

Improvements:

  • Token bar and token menu have been merged. Token actions were split between two places and it felt clunky, so now all your token controls are available by right-clicking on a token. Also, it's a tad bit more organized now.

  • Merged Hide and Reveal tools. Speaking of being organized, the Hide and Reveal tools have now been merged into one Fog tool. As with the Draw and Shape tools, you can switch between different modes (Hide and Reveal) from the action bar, by clicking on the Fog tool icon, or by tapping the hotkey (3).

  • Battle Map Quick Icons. I've listened to your feedback about the Share & Present actions being too important to be hidden in a menu, and I'm here to make amends. The in-app battle maps panel now features quick icons under the battle map name to allow you to be as productive as possible!

  • Info buttons. As you can see from the panel screenshot above, nearly every panel and dialog now has an Info button attached to it. Clicking this will open up the appropriate Helpdesk article for that panel, to help you get the most out of the app.

Bug fixes:

  • Scaling handles. If you've ever uploaded a map that's under 1000x1000px, you've probably come across the issue where resize and rotate handles for tokens, shapes, and Fog of War, as well as the Measure tool popups, were far too big. Well, no more. Everything should scale properly now depending on map dimensions and zoom level. I'm genuinely more happy about this than I am about anything else in this changelog!
  • Fixed a bug with dice notations that had a +0 modifier not being recognized as valid dice notations.
  • Fixed marker placement on tokens when combat is inactive.
  • Fixed the size of the shown dice notation while rolling dice. It was smol.
  • Fixed a bug where you couldn't mouseover the "+3" markers notation with the Pan tool to show the marker tooltips.
