We're reminding you about the Census

Now when you look up an Address Snapshot, we'll remind you about checking the mail for your Census survey, and if the address in an area that has a low response rate.

Why are we doing this? The data we get from the Census bureau is important in a lot of decision making in the private sector and in government, but it's also important that each neighborhood gets its fair representation from elected officials and funding for services.

Follow news & activity around train lines

Using the data from Transit Explorer, we've added Chicago Transit Authority 'L', Metra commuter, and South Shore Line commuter lines to our vast Places database. You can see all of the lines at once in Maps Explorer.

Want to track development around a particular section of rail transit? Find it and then click "Fave this" to get email notifications when we add news stories in that area, or when there are building permits and proposed zoning changes.

You'll see we avoid repeat lines by combining "interlined" sections into a single line. For example, where the Union Pacific West, Northwest, and North lines share track, that's a single Place. That section is only half a mile long, after which the North line splits off and heads towards the Clybourn station.

The South Shore Line heads to South Bend, Indiana, after it splits from tracks it shares with the Metra Electric District.

The same goes for the South Shore Line: There's a shared Place that combines the Metra Electric District's main branch with the South Shore Line's Illinois section.

You can also track two extension proposals:

Look up properties with delinquent taxes

For our Cityscape Pro members: We've added a new Property Finder map that shows properties that have delinquent taxes for the 2018 and earlier tax years. A tax sale will occur in May 2020 (this is different than the biannual scavenger sale).

We will soon be adding a lookup tool that will enable users to see if a given address or PIN is listed in the tax sale. The Cook County Treasurer, which manages the tax sale, has their own lookup tool.

Business licenses improved

Based on customer request, we have improved several features and functions on the Chicago Businesses Map & Spreadsheet. This page helps people find the number of businesses of a given type (like, "Retail Sales of Perishable Foods") and the number of those types in a given neighborhood.

The improvements include:

  • Faster load time
  • Faster search time
  • Clearer filter labels

Additionally, there are more filters in more places:

  • Filters added to the Businesses Map & Spreadsheet section on each Place page
  • Filters added to the Businesses Map & Spreadsheet section on each Address Snapshot

We get our data from the City of Chicago's business licenses dataset. Not all businesses are required to be licensed by the city. Banks, for example, are licensed by the State of Illinois.

1,000 new amenities

We've updated our Amenities & Social Infrastructure database to include the latest data about doctors offices, grocery stores, community centers, banks, and other neighborhood amenities. This dataset includes the 2019 survey of businesses and organizations that teens working for MAPSCorps collected.

Want to access the data? Look up an Address Snapshot.

Property sales added for 2019 Q4

Chicago Cityscape now has property sales data (locations, prices, and transfer taxes) through the end of the 4th quarter of 2019 in Cook County. The State of Illinois publishes "PTAX" data quarterly, and we add it to our databse soon after they upload it.

Our PTAX database now covers all of 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019. Visit the main PTAX dashboard (updated this month, too) or look up sales at and around any Cook County address.
