Follow news & activity around train lines

Using the data from Transit Explorer, we've added Chicago Transit Authority 'L', Metra commuter, and South Shore Line commuter lines to our vast Places database. You can see all of the lines at once in Maps Explorer.

Want to track development around a particular section of rail transit? Find it and then click "Fave this" to get email notifications when we add news stories in that area, or when there are building permits and proposed zoning changes.

You'll see we avoid repeat lines by combining "interlined" sections into a single line. For example, where the Union Pacific West, Northwest, and North lines share track, that's a single Place. That section is only half a mile long, after which the North line splits off and heads towards the Clybourn station.

The South Shore Line heads to South Bend, Indiana, after it splits from tracks it shares with the Metra Electric District.

The same goes for the South Shore Line: There's a shared Place that combines the Metra Electric District's main branch with the South Shore Line's Illinois section.
