Amazon facilities added to Transportation Snapshot

The depth of data and analysis available in our Address Snapshot tool and its three additional snapshots (currently Land Use, Environmental, and Transportation) continues to grow. Based on data collected by a recent report by WBEZ and the Better Government Association, and spurred to do it this week because of a contentious proposed new distribution center in the Bridgeport community area, we added the locations of all of the Amazon warehouses in Illinois.

Chicago currently has five Amazon facilities (fulfillment centers, sortation centers, etc.) with a sixth under construction in Pullman. The seventh facility was narrowly approved by the Chicago Plan Commission on Thursday, with all of the alders and city hall representatives on the commission and one other member voting in favor and six of the seven non-officials voting against.

The map of Amazon facilities is in addition to the intermodal yards map we added a while ago. The purpose is twofold:

  1. Our users who are looking for commercial or industrial sites can use Transportation Snapshot to assess a particular property's access to TDL facilities (that's transportation, distribution, and logistics)
  2. On the other hand, people can use Transportation Snapshot to assess the potential impacts of trucking and its negative aspects (pollution and traffic safety)
